Why are you so fixated with the scooter being called a moped? It'll be ok, trust me. And people have asked me about my "Spree" but really it's an "Elite" :nervous:. I just correct them but don't get all *.

What is considered a moped?

Answer:
Michigan law defines a moped as a two or three-wheel vehicle which meets ALL of the following limitations:

Top speed is no more than 30 mph on level surface
Engine size is 50 cc or less
No manual gearshift
2.0 or less rear brake horsepower (measure of horsepower at the rear wheel)
Vehicles meeting this definition are classified as a moped and are registered with a 3-year moped decal for $15. Vehicles exceeding any of the characteristics listed above are classified as motorcycles

I am from michigan so this is what a moped IS here.

Even wiki defines a moped in this way.

Mopeds are a type of low-powered motorcycle designed to provide economical and relatively safe transport with minimal licensing requirements. Mopeds were once all equipped with bicycle-like pedals (the source of the term, motor-pedal), but moped has been increasingly applied by governments to vehicles without pedals, based on their restricted engine displacement, speed, and/or power output. Mopeds occasionally resemble powered bicycles, but most are now step-through designs (of both kinds, having either large or small wheels) and step-over designs similar to a regular motorcycle.

In Washington state, they have to have pedals.

"Moped" means a motorized device designed to travel with not more than three sixteen-inch or larger diameter wheels in contact with the ground, having fully operative pedals for propulsion by human power, and an electric or a liquid fuel motor with a cylinder displacement not exceeding fifty cubic centimeters which produces no more than two gross brake horsepower (developed by a prime mover, as measured by a brake applied to the driving shaft) that is capable of propelling the device at not more than thirty miles per hour on level ground.

That really sucks.

You have titles and insurance for your scooters too, don't you?

Just don't get confused, or try to correct me, when I call my scooter a moped.

It ain't all that bad. A "Scooter" is defined as less than 50 cc and capable of less than 30 mph. You transfer the title, get your registration, put your plate on it and ride. No motorcycle endorsement required and no insurance, but the no insurance thing applies to all motorcycles here, go figure. :eyeroll:

Same here. so if your pedals are broke you can't get it registered and it also must have a automatic clutch.

scooters are without pedals, mopeds are with pedals. Scooters must be in a 45mph area or less, along with mopeds. only diff here that sets them apart is pedals and titles. my scooter was registered as a Motor driven cycle. not motorcycle. figure that one out. lol cost 9 bucks a year to have a plate.

There are several scooters that can go much faster than 45mph.

I consider my scooters just that, scooters. But I also have a Puch, and am into mopeds. But it doesn't really matter to me what people call them, its just a personal preference to me.
