Anybody been to Antarctica?

Post by PolarIce »

This old man has been reminiscent this week with the USCGC Polar Star (my old ship's sister, see my sig) going down to break out those "less capable" ships out of the ice.

Probably my best tour ever in the USCG.

An American heavy icebreaker is leaving Australia for Antarctica to rescue more than 120 crew members aboard two vessels trapped in pack ice near the frozen continent's eastern edge.

The Polar Star, a 399ft coastguard cutter, had a request from Australia, Russia and China to help the Russian and Chinese ships because "there is sufficient concern that the vessels may not be able to free themselves from the ice", the coastguard said.

The Russian research ship Akademik Shokalskiy has been trapped in ice-clogged Commonwealth Bay since Christmas Eve, while the Chinese ship which came to its rescue, Xue Long (Snow Dragon) reported on Friday that it too had become stuck nearby.

A day earlier, the Chinese ship's helicopter had retrieved 52 scientists, journalists and tourists from the Russian ship, who are now on their way home aboard an Australian icebreaker, Aurora Australis.

Authorities say the 101 crew aboard the Chinese ship and 22 aboard the Russian ship had plenty of supplies and were in no immediate danger. The Polar Star has cut short its planned stop in Sydney, Australia, to assist.

"Our highest priority is safety of life at sea, which is why we are assisting in breaking a navigational path for both of these vessels." Vice Admiral Paul Zukunft, the coastguard Pacific Area commander, said. "We are always ready and duty bound to render assistance in one of the most remote and harsh environments on the face of the globe."

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority's Rescue Co-ordination Centre, which oversaw the rescue, said the Polar Star, the US Coast Guard's only active heavy polar icebreaker, would leave Sydney today after taking on supplies.

It will take about seven days to reach Commonwealth Bay, depending on weather.

After the Snow Dragon reported it was stuck on Friday, AMSA told the Aurora to stay in the area, with its rescued passengers on board, in case help was needed. Under international conventions observed by most countries, ships' crews are obliged to take part in such rescues and the owners carry the costs.

Yesterday AMSA said the Aurora was allowed to continue and the Chinese and Russian ships were safe.

Andrew Peacock, an Australian doctor and photographer who was rescued from the Russian ship, said he and his fellow passengers "have been and continue to be thankful for all the help we have been given and ... aware of the cost and inconvenience to others".

"Handwritten notes of gratitude from each person rescued have been scanned and faxed to the captain of the Chinese ship and Chinese authorities and we remain concerned for that ship and the Akademik Shokalskiy which remain in the ice and we fervently hope that the Polar Star gets there quickly to free those vessels and their crew."

The Polar Star left its home port of Seattle in early December to take part in one of its main missions, Operation Deep Freeze, to break a channel through the sea ice of McMurdo Sound to resupply and refuel the US Antarctic Programme's McMurdo Station on Ross Island.

A reporter for China's official Xinhua News Agency aboard the Snow Dragon, Zhang Jiansong, said an iceberg appeared over Thursday night and blocked the ship's return route.

He said the ship would again try to find a way out, possibly as early as tomorow, when westerly winds would hopefully loosen the ice's grip. The Snow Dragon was 13 miles from open water, he said.

as captain paul watson from sea shephard has said, the russian ship was never in and would never of been in any danger because their ship has ice classification, its reinforced, as soon as the winds change etc, the ice will simply move and will free them. theyre not going to run out of food etc any time soon. here is his commentary on the situation.
Much Ado About Nothing

The Kademik Shohalskiv is perfectly safe.

Commentary by Captain Paul Watson

The Russian ship presently ÔÇ£trappedÔÇØ in Antarctic ice is not in danger, has never been in danger, and the only thing required is patience.

I have had extensive experience with Arctic and Antarctic ice navigation with nine voyages to Antarctica and 6 winter voyages offshore of Labrador. I have been ÔÇ£trappedÔÇØ in ice on a number of occasions and what I found to be the best course of action is to simply wait it out.

The Kademik Shohalskiv is not in danger and was never in danger. The vessel has an ice class rating and it will not be crushed by summer ice. The vessels are designed to be lifted with the freezing ice. It is simply being held in the grip of an ice pack under pressure from wind, current and tide.

These are forces in constant change and being that it is early summer in Antarctica, the ice pack near Commonwealth Bay will release the ship. If this situation had occurred in late February or March there would be cause for concern but at this stage in the season it is an absolute certainty that the ice will release the ship.

The sending of icebreakers from their missions has been a waste of tax dollars, resources and a disruption of the services they were engaged in.

The passengers onboard the ship should simply enjoy their experience. They will be telling stories about their ÔÇ£ordealÔÇØ for decades.

The Russian ship is positioned about 100 nautical miles (185 km) east of the French Antarctic station Dumont D'Urville and about 1,500 nautical miles (2,800 km) south of Hobart, Tasmania.

Australian, China and France have all sent icebreakers to the rescue.

I find it quite telling that Australia can send a ship to rescue another vessel not in any danger yet cannot monitor illegal whaling activities in Australian Antarctica Territorial waters.

The 101 members of the crews of the three Sea Shepherd ships face violent opposition from outlaw Japanese whalers yet their safety is of little concern to the Australian government.

There has been a long history of the Australian government spending millions of dollars to rescue tourists and yachtsmen and spending virtually nothing to defend the environmental integrity of the region.

The crews of the Sea Shepherd ships are constantly being attacked by armchair critics as being ÔÇ£unprofessionalÔÇØ or ÔÇ£reckless.ÔÇØ Yet in an entire of decade of sending numerous ships to Antarctic waters, Sea Shepherd has never had any crew lost or injured and has not had to call for a rescue from being trapped in ice. Sea Shepherd ships have been ÔÇ£trappedÔÇØ in ice but through patience and experience the crews found the way out of the situations without assistance.

Where Sea Shepherd did need assistance is when the vessels and crew were attacked and rammed by the Japanese whalers with one ship completely destroyed.

Each time the answer from the Australian government has been, ÔÇ£you are all on your own down there and there is nothing we can do.ÔÇØ

The only reason that three nations are sending icebreakers to ÔÇ£rescueÔÇØ the ÔÇ£trappedÔÇØ ship is because they fear criticism if they do nothing. They all know that the Kademik Shohalskiv is not in any real danger.
