World of jets? Scooter tuning

Post by MrJumps »

Ive always wondered if the sprees or any carbed scooter sold in NY would be the same as the CA jet wise? Ive tried googling it with no luck. I know some cars are sold with hill assist and some with transmission that wont roll backwards.

New York has a mean elevation of 1000 feet above sea level and California has a mean elevation of 2900 ft, that is only a difference of 1900 feet, jetting needs would be very close to each other.
However Colorado has a mean elevation of 6800 feet about sea level and Louisiana has a mean elevation of only 100 feet, those two states should use different jetting, however I don't think that they came with different jets, others can chime in with more information on that. My scooter had high elevation jets listed as optional. People who are not into motorcycles cannot fathom the concept of tuning an engine by changing jets, it is a waste of time and words trying to explain it to those individuals.
I have not heard of any scooters with hill assist, perhaps you could market a kit.

The only jets on the microfiche are 68 and 65 for the spree as far as I remember. The 65 is for the restricted Iowa spree. The jetting would need to be smaller for the super high elevations wouldn't it?

I have taken my stock carb, stock cylinder, and stock block 98 elite sr from 562 feet in st louis all the way to 10,800 in the Rocky Mountain national forest with out changing jets. Obviously at 10k +elevation it was a little sluggish to start off but after it was not much difference. I figured I would have washed out a plug but at the end of the day there wasn't any issues. I bring my scoots to the mountains every chance I get and even my built bikes run fine. It sounds odd but it's true.

Back when the spree was produced c.a.r.b. was not yet worried about scooters. Carbs been around since Reagan but he wasn't worried about 49cc bikes, only 100 cc and above. I think it was in the 90s when they cracked down on 2 stroke 49cc scooters.

Thanks for the response guys, now I have another question. How would jetting be on 0 Celsius vs 60? I would assume the colder air would make it run leaner?

Greetings:

You are correct, air-cooled scooters actually overheat more in very cold weather. Weird huh?

So that brings me to my next question, could you put a fuel injector on a carbed scooter redneck style? Like say a tiny injector meant for a smart car or and just kinda modified it and sealed it to the carb? Im just trying to pop the bubbles to understanding jetting.

Adapting a small injector from say a motorcycle or lawnmower is only the beginning, you will need a microprocessor as well as input sensors, and a pressurized fuel sytem. But yes it could be done.
If you choose this journey, please post your pictures and story along the way.
I think it would be far easier to just buy a fuel injected scooter.

At one point not that long ago I had found a kit online to add fuel injection to most small engines including scooters, it diddnt look too complicated. But it was pricey but cant remember how much it was

What would be good though is if i found a sr50 engine and did a 70cc bbk on it with the 80 pound spree frame, could do 120ish`140ish kph. That thing would rip, but i can't find a engine or casing anywhere, not even from apprila.

I have a 09' SR50 70cc Malossi fuel injected engine sitting in my garage! It was my first scooter $3500!! DirtyD got me into the game. It did 50-55 sitting up after the kit and a pipe along with tranny mods. I bought spare cases and converted to carb. I just bought a 94cc malossi mhr team cylinder, stroker crank and pipe for it, it's on its way to Michigan from Italy.

I don't own a spree yet but I have adapted a piaggio athena/stage6 pro race cylinder to a Honda hobbit engine and mounted it to a honda express frame. I got it up to 67mph till I slowed down before the railroad tracks. Later I found I cracked the subframe, which explained the flexing I felt when the power band hit.
