ancient chineese secret clutch mod
ok. you can try this if you want, but you gotta cut your kick cover in half to do it. i have only put 250 miles on it so far, so reliability is unknown.
Hmmmm.... does that look firmilar to anyone? it turns out that honda-san liked the spline design for the spree clutch SO MUCH that he recycled it in the dio design. and the chineese dont have their own design and copied the dio, so the cheap china clutch off a parts bike laying around was retrofitted to the stock spree pully, with the center spring cut in half.
Oh, and 3k grab springs. If i set up my pully mod to top at 38, it takes off like a stock spree. at 40 it's still a bit sluggish, but d*** good for a stock-sized bore, non-variated spree.
BUT...
the clutch spins in the opposite direction than it is supposed to...
and here's my other bike with t-jamz's stock dio engine on it.
My engine should be together later this week.

Re: ancient chineese secret clutch mod
I like those panels too.
Things You need to do for this mod
1. find a GY6 clone, dio, or elite s Clutch and bell.
2. Get some 2k or 3k dio grab springs (depending on how you like to take off) and install them.
3. Do the "spree pully mod" (Shave down the front pully boss so the belt rides higher in the front pulley.
4. Take apart the spree clutch/rear pully.
5. shorten the spree spring by 1/3 (to ease the stress on the belt)
6. attach dio clutch to spree rear pully with shortened spring in between
7. mod your spree cover so it fits back on (The dio clutch is Big)
The previous draw back to the "pulley mod" was the huge decrease in low end take off, and the super low engagement of the clutch. This fixes all of that.
some people might not want to cut up there covers and have a huge clutch bell sticking out the back of the spree. I guess the soulution to that would be clutch grab springs actually made for the spree. But as far as I know , no one makes those.
Hey Taz are you reading this? We need some grab springs for the spree

Re: ancient chineese secret clutch mod
Hmmm... I have a spare clutch and bell from an AFO5E think that would work? I don't have any Dios to compare it to.

Re: ancient chineese secret clutch mod
didnt AE86GUY change his grab springs on his spree? guess i better look for an x-tra dio clutch and some grab springs. so will we have to change the belt length to the elite belt or will we keep the spree belt?

Re: ancient chineese secret clutch mod
Only the dio clutch and bell are used NOT the dio rear pully. The dio clutch gets attached to the spree pully, so no belt change is required.odinxxix wrote:didnt AE86GUY change his grab springs on his spree? guess i better look for an x-tra dio clutch and some grab springs. so will we have to change the belt length to the elite belt or will we keep the spree belt?
martnkim: If you can get grab springs for that AFO5E clutch ...then it probably will work.

I'm makin a list of stuff i need for my next monster build..
front pulley half (the metal one, not aluminum..)
dio clutch (or equivelant)
all the springs your talkin bout..(i want crazy, neck breaking take off..so recommend 2 or 3k?) center and clutch springs
and last a diff belt (assuming since your messing with the size.)
30 pack of beer (miller lite or bud light, one of the other)
anything i missed other than machine work?

Did you see how spreetards case is cut? I wanna do one that is curved more and fits tighter around the new clutch bell.mustangwagz wrote:I'm makin a list of stuff i need for my next monster build..

For neck breaking take off I would go with 3k's
I think this mod will go nice with a 48mm bbk!
Clutch grab springs only. the center spring gets cut to 2/3 it's original size. (to ease belt tension and change the overall ratio)martynkim wrote:You are talkin about clutch springs or center springs both available from VT

Re: ancient chineese secret clutch mod
Ten-4!!..
funding is LOW atm so like i said before..the 48 will be my back burner project once i get the current 44 all settled in.
btw marty, still didnt get my vapor guage all hooked up. Mounted as you seen, but i need to get extensions for my CHT wire, and then lengthen my power wire as well. (need shrink tubing too, get that at work tomorrow!)
but ya know, now that the spree has all these options available, we're gonna have them up N rippin before to long.. Gear ratio upgrades, clutch mods, bbks, Custom Trick Exhaust (from taz hopefully) and maybe a variator (might not be needed after this clutch thing and a gear ratio upgrade) Soon we'll all be buying better rated tires for the spree's. lol So long 35mph, hello 55!!
there just aint enough time in a day to play with my scoot. LOL since i got it, and found this site..it gets more attention then pretty much EVERYTHING..
as for cuttin my case tjam, i think some die grinder will be involved to shape it in a little. Muhahah!

Re: ancient chineese secret clutch mod
Just checked the center hole between the spree clutch and the AFO5E totally different. But, VT sells brand new dio clutches for $25 so, If the bell is the same I might be able to do this! Off to the fiche to check cross reference part #'s You using a 91-95 Clutch or Earlier?

Re: ancient chineese secret clutch mod
I took some pics that will help people understand this mod.
You will need a big * wrench
On the left is stock spree on the right, stock elite s(dio)
you need to cut the stock spree spring.
I did not actually install the grab springs for the picture.
