Junkyard Zuma

Post by Mystic »

Well I decided I would post some pics of the 03 Zuma I picked up at the salvage yard on Tuesday. Spent hte past 3 days cleaning gunk off the motor and disassembling/cleaning dust, dirt, and gunk off all the rear components (gas tank, oil tank, etc etc) Got carb cleaned, checked reeds, new plug, fresh gas and oil, cleaned carbon from exhaust port and header, took flywheel off and took the oil pump out to clean and verify function. I have done 3 FULL days of work on this thing. The entire CVT was corroded and rusted tightm worst I have ever seen must have been flooded or under water or something. Despite all this poor maintanence and rough handling as soon as the carb bowl filled from the tank, kick kick kick VROOOMM she cranked without any trouble at all with tons of smoke out the tail pipe :D Here are a few pics after i got the plastics and stuff back on, needs more work but at least she runs. BTW anyone know how to get a disk brake plunger unstuck??

Nice one Matt... :thumbwink:
I'm a fan...I rode w/Zuma 50 that would run 50 mph with little modding.

 YA Down hill with a 50mph wind behind them! The zuma's are very HEAVY and take a good amount of money to get speed out of.

Thanks, I plan on restoring it to stock form and get it looking good before I do any mods other than an upgraded CVT since the current one is all fudged up and put in some carbon fiber reeds. I am going to do the headlight mod so both work at the same time and install the rear blinkers into the blank places on the tail light assembly. Gotta disassemble the front end now to see what all is wrong/missing there so I can place an order with yamaha to replace all the body parts and stuff that I cant get aftermarket. I gotta get a new airfilter so I am going to order a cheap belt with that so I can at least ride a little. Dont want to buy a new yamaha belt and have the CVT prematurely wear it out :P Here is a few pics of the CVT parts before I cleaned them. The pic of the crankcase has the large starter gear that I was unable to free up and remove after days of prying and penetrating oil so I just put it back together I can do without the electric start for now especially since the starter clutch itself needs replaced

If the disk brake is hydraulic (assume it is) then you'll need to use fluid pressure to blow it out. Remove the caliper and pads and reef down on the brake handle... it should start moving out. Keep an eye on your fluid level and keep it topped off.

It's messy but should do the job. Bleed the brake lines if you need to.

Fluid pressure will generate 600-800 PSI. Don't use air... best you'll get is 100 PSI in there... no comparison. Don't pull with pliers... waste of time.

If this doesn't work, and the piston's toast, start by getting it to twist in place with pliers, then re-apply fluid pressure. I've never had to do this though, b/c it's hard to beat 600 pounds pressure.

If bike was in water, chances are brake fluid has water in it. May start by flushing out old fluid 1st.
