led blinker problem

Post by PorterGuy85 »

Its a honda but not a scooter.Figured i'd post here.

Swapped from bulb type to led blinkers on my '85 xl350r.

The problem:

If I push the indicator switch to Left or Right I get all 4 blinkers to come ÒÇèÒÇèonÒÇïÒÇï

No blink, no flicker just on.

I figured i'd have them hyperblink. Put in a new relay since the oem was bad. New one does same thing. Bench tested it with a spare trailer light

Here's some vids. Thanks guys

I figured I'd need something, but what has me puzzled is when L or R is selected why do all 4 come on? They're 2 separate circuits. I could see both left or both right, but all 4? And they should at least blink fast, then a resistor would slow it down.

Hi PG. your LED'S do not have enough watts to trigger the flasher. you need a led flasher relay.
do a test, put back one bulb in each side, and one led on each sides give it a try. the old bulb will put a load on the flasher and should blink.
if not working connect all the bulb including the led. give it a try. the lights should blink.
check flebay for a led flasher relay. one that you can adjust. hope this helps. :hi:

I bought led flashers for scooters from China. They cost around 2.50$ free shipping. DX.com they flash with any amount of load :-) it even has the rubber mount and is the same shape and size as the OEM honda scooter relay http://www.dx.com/p/cyt-plastic-electri ... Am0ELdyfng

I picked up an electronic relay earlier. It's 3 prong. My thermal had 2. This is ground, 12v., load. Do I have to ground it now. Or just use the same 2. Load and 12v.

Hmm. I think you need the two prong for motorcycle. I never tried the 3 prong on a bike.

Well I have some closer good news, with the electronic flasher installed. I have all ÒÇèÒÇè4ÒÇïÒÇï flash at a good normal pace. Like hazard lights in a car. Whether I select L or R.

Sounds like a short somewhere. Or some wires in nthe wrong places. You may have to follow all of the wire in the harness and check to make sure all connectors are going to the right plugs

Yes, I concur. Probably wires crossed. I'll check later. Thanks for all the help.

Traced all wires and compared to a wiring diagram for the bike, all checks out. Last place i've checked is the indicator bulb/wiring. The bulb doesn't come on.Since it is for L & R, both wires leading to the blinkers also come to this point and emit the single "bulb". I either have a short there or the bulb burnt/causing lines to touch or because its a bulb & not an led. But I still have the 4 way hazard light effect. Relay seems to be fine.

Problem solved. As I suspected. Pulled the instrument panel blinker indicator bulb and Bingo!!

Blinkers work as they should. I dont really need the indicator, since I can see the lights themselves.

Thanks again for all the help & input.
