Harbor Freight 6.5 hp . Gas tank issue

Post by jakubman1 »

Ok so i got this go kart started after sitting for 3 years. The gas tank leaks right at the seal where the nipple is on the gas tank. Its rotted but i cleaned the tank super good.

So i thought i could drill out the plastic nipple thats still there and tap the hole make a thread then put like some sort of fitting with a seal. What do you guys think? I know its a simple fix that requires just a little crafty.

Yeah but its probably cheaper to buy a new tank. If you put a metal nipple back in it braze it with a torch.

Be very careful welding a gas tank. Only skilled individuals should attempt this deadly task. Even when flushed out, vapors still exist and are explosive. Pair that with the confines of a fuel tank and you have yourself a powerful bomb with shrapnel. Most welding shops wont even touch gas tanks. Buy a new/used one and save yourself the disfigurement.

People have died doing this, sometimes even people who have done it several times before. Only takes one miss step.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

This is true. Metal is porous at microscopic levels and holds onto gasoline in the tiny holes. Less gas/more air is a hotter explosion as we all know from tuning. I'd use jb weld or buy a new tank.

Or buy a junior dragster fuel tank. You can get cool racing-style parts for those 4t lawnmower/go-kart motors.

GOOD POINT. I didn't even think of that. Could be plastic.

I really can't say what to do until I see the what you're talking about. The "Predator" 6.5 is what I assume you have.
I have several friends with these..will try to get a look at one and get back to you.
