4 strokes are boring and have way to many parts.

graphite9 wrote:So, I have been swapping scooters for people locally. Today will be my first 150 gy6 swap into an elite. Question is why are people so against it? I'll be able to get 10hp and 55 MPH for half the price of a dio build. Plus I will last longer than a strung out two stroke. Please let me know your opinions. If dio motors were readily available I'd go, that route, but if someone wants a swapped scooter a gy6 is a no brainer for cost/performance.

Top 3 reasons for not swapping a 150cc gy6

#3 Its heavy !
I like being able to load and unload my scooter into the back of my truck with out calling for help.

#2 It mounts from the top
some serious fabrication work must be done to overcome the top mount and horizontal engine configuration.

#1 Its Chinese crap.
A quaility Honda motor will out last any Chinese gy6 clone. and a well build honda motor will out perform it too.

I'm not against it. I just prefer Honda quality. :)

If it's (GY6) available to you, and you can use it, then by all means use it. Even more so, when you think it's a great value and it attains the goals that the person who is riding it has. As long as the person that's riding it is happy then it's all good. :)

I also have ridden both 2T and 4T, and I just prefer the way the 2T rides.
There will always be pros and cons for both 2T and 4T, and groups that support one or the other.
I recommend people to ride both and see which best fits/ match their own preference and riding style.
Of course, this is all just my humble opinion. :thumbwink:

Dude... you're on a board that's oriented around Japanese built 2-stroke bikes. Why are you surprised?

It's like going onto a Camaro board, talking about how you're going to swap in a Mopar 383 into a Camaro, and then being shocked when no one thinks it's a good idea.

Greetings:

I'm all for trying out new things, and eager to see what you create. Someone here has done a One-Fif-Spree already, but I seem to learn something from every build post I read. Have at it!

That said, the Power-to-Weight ratio of a GY-6 just about has be lower than a Minarelli build. Unless you know how to grind cams, enlarge valves, and step up compression, the 150 will be hard-pressed to reach 12 HP.
Then again, from what you describe, the Power-to-Cost ratio may be much better.

Do beware the Legendary poor quality of Chinese clone engines, however.

this engine was produced and put in mopar cars... gm's 383 is a junk yard build with a 400 crank in a 350 block after years of guys doing this they realized they could sell it as a crate motor all new from the factory.... gm has never put this motor in a car from production....

True. But I'm also on a BMW forum where guys swap ls1's into them all day long. I guess this forum has more purists :)

ls1s are badass motors out of the box for what they are and are some of the most swapped motors around.... not to say there is anything wrong with bmw motors though....

because they are CHEAP! not because of the great quality (which depends on what day, factory, and material used) not everything made is china is terrible, but you get what you pay for.... if Honda has a 150 that could be swapped just a easy and for a lil bit more you would see that instead of the Chinese motor....

That's an ignorant statement. I challenge you to ride a yz or crf450 and say its boring. They have a timing chain/cam/valves. That's it. And they last longer without a rebuild. If the gy6 motors are so terrible then why are guys swapping them into ruckuses, and not swapping two strokes in.

Building a GY6 is like building a small block chevy, any moron can do it, hence boring. Oh and how many engines have you built in your life to be able to recognize boring when it slaps your ignorant face?

You guys are funny. I expect I'll get a reported post or PM out of all this, telling me again about how Bear never leaves anyone alone. Just as a reminder, the push and shove started here:
That's an ignorant statement.
as quote Graphite.

Calling a GY6 boring does not equal calling someone ignorant.

That's good.

I think calling 4-strokes boring is flippant, rather than ignorant.

Be careful with that rear brake...

As far as i know, the fast ruckus tend to do the yamaha grand axis swap, which is a 100cc 2t. I think you'll see more gy6s just because they are dirt cheap and most ruckus owners would rather put 3k into deep dish bling wheels and such rather than have a quick scoot!

To each his own, i have nothing against 4t swaps though.
