Exhaust Gasket for Spree

Post by SpreeKC »

Looking through the forum I couldn't find a definitive answer for this:
Are there any alternative ehuast gaskets that have worked well for anyone? Mine always seems to leak and cause problems.
Also, Everytime I need to take the exhaust off for one reason or another the crush gasket gets worse and on top of that im always breaking my screw posts trying to get a tight seal again. I don't want to use a sealant but was wondering if there is a better alternative or a cheaper source for a bunch of crush gaskets?

I buy them from the Honda dealer for a couple bucks each and they are awesome, I always keep a bunch on hand. I don't find they need to be all that tight, and I can use them over and over. the Honda ones are much better than they were ever originally. That being said I have a ton of the donut copper crush gaskets on the way to see of they are the same size to fit the spree they were a $3 for 10. I need the copper gaskets for my express pipe. The gasket is the same for the express and spree but the tuned pipe I have works better with the copper gasket.

If you are always breaking exhaust studs maybe they need some antiseaze compound on them and you could be over touring them down as well. Spray some penetrating oil on them first before removing, just to lube things up and help break the baked on rust loose and keep the threads from binding up thus requiring less torque and not break them off.

It sounds like you're way over-tightening the exhaust flange nuts. Most of the weight is carried by the muffler support bracket, and the flange nuts are only a little more than hand-tightened with a 10mm socket on a 1/4" drive (not too much muscle). It helps to put some Copper Loctite Never Seize on the threads. Then the nuts will always come off easily.

I only use the 1/4 drive socket for the exhaust studs, and light stuff like that poor mans torque wrench ;-) I put the two mounting bolts where the pipe attaches to the motor in just finger tight then snug the studs up a little and then do a bit of a turn each like a spark plug then snug up the mount bolts on the motor case. That way the pressure on the gasket is even.

Thanks for the info guys! I guess new gaskets are the way to go. 10 for 3$ sounds reasonable what's the source on that.
