so I've got 2 engines to work on and have a question
Which one is better suited for modification?
the sym dd50 or an af16e pulled from an elite
will probably keep the stock crank on either setup but with
with a 72 kit and pipe for either one
any thoughts?
thanks

Comes down to which unit you are able to get replacement parts for easiest.Dr_Craw wrote:so I've got 2 engines to work on and have a question

I was always under the impression the parts are almost completely interchangeable?sanjuro wrote:Comes down to which unit you are able to get replacement parts for easiest.Dr_Craw wrote:so I've got 2 engines to work on and have a question

Re: sym dd50 vs af16e block
As Red EFT said: both are good for buildups, just need to keep track of the small differences between them and make allowances for it.
almost all parts with few exceptions are interchangeable, similar to the slight differences between the AF16s and AF18s as AF18s weren't really for the US domestic market
the DD50 is a good repro; there's many DD50 builds here in Hawaii, maybe perhaps more than AF16s as they have stopped making the AF16 and are still importing the DD50s

Re: sym dd50 vs af16e block
Totally agree here. If you're in Hawaii I'd say go with the dd50 because they're still being imported and there's lots of parts available. Not sure what you guys have in canada but I feel like the af16/af18 would be more accessible in canada than the dd50.Dio89Elite wrote:As Red EFT said: both are good for buildups, just need to keep track of the small differences between them and make allowances for it.

Re: sym dd50 vs af16e block
The dd50 has a weak stator side crank case. They crack easily. Personally I'd stay away from them.
You can use an af16e case with the af16 stator and flywheel I've been told by my HI people.
