1985 Spree AF16

Post by Ben L. »

I started the build a few weeks ago. Modified and shortened the Elite S engine mount so the engine didn't sit so far back on the Spree. I have a few things to finish up but took it for a ride this morning. The speedo showed about 40mph top end. I'm not a fan of this air cleaner but couldn't find anything better. Suggestions welcome!

I am looking to find some clutch springs for the stock clutch. Goals right now are to see what I can get out of the stock bore with just transmission mods. In the future I would like to go for a Corsa, PG short and appropriate carb/intake.

Mod List:
Derestricted
#80MJ
Polini Variator (Stock Boss)
6.9g Rollers
9:1 Gears
Sidestand

Should be able to reach 50mph pretty easily with a good tune on the lightweight spree frame. Looking good so far!

I'm also gonna use this as a log for my tuning. Maybe others will find this helpful.

Tonight I did a top speed run with my current setup:
Derestricted
#80MJ
Polini Variator (Stock Boss)
6.9g Rollers
9:1 Gears

Top speed indicated was 43mph on the flats.

After that I switched to the polini 5.6g rollers that came with the polini variator. 44mph.
The engine definitely seems to rev higher (Need a tach) I'm gonna order some weights in between and see if I can squeeze a little more out of it.

Does anybody know when the limiter kicks in?

Upon changing the variator weights I noticed a bit of play on the crank. I threw a new polini belt on and took it for a quick spin. I noticed a lot of noise coming from assumingly the crank bearing. The belt killed takeoff but I'll allow it some break in time before judging it.

Looks like I'll be ordering crank bearings/ seals this weekend. Might be awhile before its back on the road :(

If anybody is interested, I restored this 78 Puch Maxi over winter. I purchased a spare engine and completely blasted/ powdered and then built it. Fired it up for the first time last week and I've put quite a few miles on it. Still gotta get it timed right but its pretty close. Max temp 330F.

Puch E50 engine
Rito Crank
70cc K-Star top end
Hpi Mini Rotor Cdi
Converted to 12v
Stock Braced Clutch with high tension springs
MLM Peoples Pipe

There is no limiter. You can get 50 out of her with 9.1s!

Well this build is starting to ball out of control. What was supposed to be a crank bearing replacement is turning into a full blown build. I got a deal on the $100 Malossi 72cc cast iron kit from Graphite9 and decided to order a Malossi crank from him as well. I sourced a Tusk puller on the forum and am thinking of powdercoating the cases while they are ripped apart. Ugh.

When I pulled the case halves the variator side bearing "keepers" were crumbled and pieces everywhere. Good thing I stopped running when I did.

Haven't had much time to play with it but while everything is apart I decided to blast/ powder the wheels. The rear Elite wheel was in terrible shape, rust everywhere and the front I am gonna do an Elite wheel with Met brake combo. I've had this blue powder sitting in the garage that I always wanted to try on something so I decided to try them on the wheels.

It does look goofy but I'm gonna go with it and see if it grows on me. I also was thinking gloss black or just gray but ya gotta take chances once in a while. I can always change it anyways.

Anyways enough talking for me. :blah:

Few updates. I got the crank in and cases sealed thursday, and friday morning prepped the top end for assembly. I installed the rings to check gap and broke one :(

I got the elite front wheel/met brake installed but the elite cable is really long. Gotta find something shorter than that but longer than the spree cable.

Then I mocked up fitment for plastic clearance.

Thank you! Haven't made too much progress. I'm waiting on a variator nut that will be here tomorrow from honda. I also need to find a new kickstart unit. Think I'll steal the one off my new Elite just to give it some heat cycles. I also need to work on the heat shroud by the spark plug. This malossi cast kit head places the spark plug off center from the hole, just enough the boot won't go all the way on.

I was trying to describe the variator side crank bearing. It has a "keeper" that keeps the balls spaced apart.

Finally made a little progress... Rebuild the bottom end with Malossi crank, installed a corsa, Naraku intake, CP polini 21mm carb, zx trans, polini vari, and my pg long pipe. The bike is absolutely nuts! This coming saturday the local scooter group is hosting a drag racing event at the drag strip. I gotta hurry and get this thing tuned. I'm gonna try going to 9:1 gears and see how it does.
