'87 SE50 Rough rider - wheels, exhaust, suspension

Post by burnt_toast »

Hey folks,
finally getting around to sprucing up my side prj, an all original '87 SE50 Elite! Was used as a pit bike by previous owner (hence the stickers, which I'm going to keep btw!) but obviously has seen some street at some point in her life with over 4k mi on the clock.

Just to be up front, she looks rough and for the most part, I'm going to keep her looking that way. Aesthetics take a back seat on my builds over performance, and truth be told makes it more fun to ride when you don't have to worry about keeping it pristine.

Mods done so far to get her going:
-JB welded hole in Airbox (which prev owner used to spray carb cleaner directly.. LOL)
-new UNI foam filter
-new NGK sparkplug
-flush mount turn signals
-reupholstered seat with duct tape! 8)

And now first order of business, is some new tires! Have 2.75-10 Bridgestone Hoops on order, and with that one aesthetic thing I'd like to do is paint the stock wheels. I'm kind of undecided which way to go. flat black is my first choice, or maybe gold-ish, also considered lime green just to really offset the look but don't know how I might like that in the long run.

Anyway, here's some pics of her, with up coming DJ-1R exhaust upgrade after I do the wheels/tires. Let me know what you guys think would be a good wheel color combo!

cheers,
-bt

Kinda reminds me of mine, which I'm also leaving kind of rough. I'm not sure which duct tape you used, but I've found that it generally turns into a sticky, gooey mess after awhile and ruins your clothes. You might want to consider recovering your seat. Just a thought.

Good to see this come out of the blue...
Thank you for starting a build in the "Build Workshop" and showing others just what that means
instead of posting a thread with a bunch of ideas and big plans, but no effort to show any work.
Agree with Kustomkarma about the nastiness you have welcomed with all that tape.
Texas sun is going to make that mess (even more) embarassing.
Cover it with one of your old tee-shirts...it's free...and it's not blistering hot.
My vote goes to White wheels...this model looks very good with white.

Yes, white will contrast well with the black pipe.

shirt idea sounds nice, if it starts getting sticky i might just do that. garaged most of the time so not really worried about it getting too beat down with the sun. plus i oddly really like the duct tape look haha :P

eek white huh hmm im def more of a black on black kind of guy. but i've thought about putting a big honda wing sticker up front, in white so guess that might go together.

any other colors? personally still leaning toward flat black.. lol
anyone have a pic of a red SE w/ white wheels for reference?

Ive always been a fan of flat black myself, perhaps that with just a white reflective ring would pop nicely.

Wrapped this up last week and finally getting around to upload. Color wise, went with something TOTALLY different, either hate it or love it :P

hopefully this isn't pic whoring too much, but these are the best sequence shots I could pick, with captions. enjoy

my starting baseline, well worn stockers and ugly looking rims
Image

split in middle, this was my front tire. verrrry sketchyyyy
Image

cleaned up rims, new Bridgestone Hoops 2.75-10's installed!
Image

Plastidip white, base coat. a little overspray on tire, no biggy
Image

preview of things to come..

.......

KABLAM!! in YO face NEON ORANGE!!! hahah
Image

ready to roll out for a test ride
Image

what better proving ground than the local abandoned go cart track :o
Image

the finished look, piped, painted and newly tire'd

Not a perfect paintjob, but overall pretty satisfied at how she turned out.
The Hoops: WAY stickier than previous tires! can tell they won't last as long as stock type tires, but cornering feels very nice. the only problem, while she rides with stock power beside pipe at the moment, the new look is mean and more aggressive imo.. didn't plan on it and was going to stop here, but gonna have to do something about that... :ndance:

more modding in the works 8)

Im glad you went crazy with the color, that looks rad! I was so tempted to get that pipe for my 93', how does it compare over stock? Hopefully itll pick up with the vari.

thanks!

honestly, by itself gains are minimal. i do think lack of trans tuning it holding it back. stock actually has more pop on low end, where power comes on higher in revs with the DJ-1R. also noticeably heavier than stock.
however it looks awesome, enough to trump performance for now :P

My first build was an afo5, i did the malossi kit, naraku, and 21cp polini, polini vari, evo clutch and bell, it had a 2nd life after it hit 40 and then pulled nicely up to 50. Honestly the carb and intake opened it up the most and the bore needed dremel work cuz its smaller than the case. I also ran stock pipe. All from sss. Bet with ur pipe that combo would hit 55-60.

mentioned suspension in the title, and finally did this mod! had it rolling around in my head for a while, and did it just before a go-cart track day, and it worked like a charm! and took no time at all, total bolt on straight forward swap.

rear suspension:
stock Kymco ZX50 stock shock - a good bit stiffer than stock SE50, and has actual damping. perfect fit, same length eye to eye. SUCH a nicer ride now

front suspension:
swapped stock front springs for SA50 front springs! overall result, drop of about 1" and way better handling, now similar front geometry to SA50's. no longer twitchy at turns. only problem is rub on the front fender upon front braking, running a spare spaced fender for now but will address this soon.

Nice work Burnt toast! I think the handling is very important. Looks should be secondary and I'm sure you will come up with a solution for the fender rub. Love the neon!!!!

Looks good :2thumbs: Almost looks like you used Windows Paint to color the rims haha! The white under neon really makes it pop. My first neon i did over black and just looked flat but wasn't too bad. This go around ill do the pink neon over white to make it pop likes yours.
