1985 Honda Spree is eating drive belts for dinner. Help!

Post by Trance88 »

I just replaced the drive belt a couple days ago. On my way home tonight, the BRAND NEW $20 belt snaps off as I'm going down the road just like the old one did. What could be causing this???

You purchased this Spree on 9/17 and it has cut 2 belts? Seems as if theres a serious problem. Quite possibly the pulleys are not OEM. If the previous owner cobbled together some spare parts, it will cut belts all day.

I assume youve checked the typical things when recently changing the belt....pulley alignment, excessive wear/rust on pulley faces, anything sharp that could be rubbing the belt, are pulley faces clean of all oil/grease that could cause slippage? etc...

Take a close look at the broken "new" belt for clues. Does it look overheated? Signs of slipping on un-broken section? Is it a quality OEM Bando belt or chinese junk?

How did it act in the moments before it broke? Was there lack of power or acceleration to indicate slip?
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

Pulleys are original
It was pretty greasy around the drive system. I got as much of the junk off as I could. I did notice that the area that the belt sits in on the clutch was hard to compress.

In the 8 miles that I drove it home from work, I noticed the top speed gradually dropping until it wouldn't go faster than about 23mph and then "fwump" goes the belt.

First thought = wrong belt, too big, starting slipping immediately until it exploded.

Taking a look at the belt today, it jumped off the clutch and jammed itself into the clutch bell housing ripping all the teeth off the belt. There's no way its too big. This is an oem belt and was listed as the spree belt.

What I mean by the clutch being hard to compress is the area where you're supposed to squeeze the clutch with the spring to get the belt on was super hard to compress. Im wondering if it's too stiff and wasn't able to get it down far enough into the clutch pulley.

Seems virtually impossible with the correct belt.
Please tell us the part # of this OEM belt.

could worn out clutch pads cause a belt to "derail" ?

No worn pads cause slipping and HP loss, your problem is probably driven face related.

Taking a closer look at one of the front halves of the front drive face pulley. This baked on old belt material will not come off. I've tried taking carb cleaner to it and it will not penetrate it at all. I can't run it like this, can I?

Also, I've been looking everywhere for a replacement drive face with no luck. No one on ebay is selling them and everyone is out of stock.
