Scooters in Asia

Post by vintagegarage »

Here are some scooter photos I took in Asia last month, starting with Japan, then moving on to Korea, China, Taiwan, and the Philippines. I'll do Japan first, and then add the other countries over the next few days.

It is difficult to find older Honda scooters in Japan.. I never saw anything older than about 2000 year models. The older ones must only come out for shows, as there are none on the streets. This first batch of photos is from the Yokohama area. It is mostly a repeat of an earlier post I made remotely from Japan, with a few new ones added. I'm repeating it here to put all the Asia photos in one topic:

Here is a Honda Dio:

I liked the basketization on this Yamaha:

I saw a lot of Gyro Canopies.. very common there:

Another Canopy:

Another Canopy:

The Canopies have kickstarters.. I guess that started when Gyros went to belt drive and variator instead of a two-speed gearbox.

Here is the dashboard of that same Gyro:

Here is one photo from the Osaka area. I liked this Cub Delivery:
Image

These next photos are from the "Fokuoka" area: In an odd censorship quirk in the board software, I had to change the second character of the name of the town from a "u" to a "o". Same for the name of the photo files. If I put a "u" instead of a "o" in the second character of the folder name, the photos are not visible:

This is a Gyro X:
Image

This is a Honda Benly. I think Honda used the Benly name for a series of motorcycles as well:
Image

This is a Suzuki Let's 4:

This is a Honda Tact:
Image

This is a Honda Today:
Image

This is definitely a Honda, but I can't find an online photo of a Honda Trickstar, so maybe the decal on the side is from something else:
Image

I especially liked this Yamaha Gear. It looks like a Gyro Canopy, but has two wheels, not three:

I like the pix, I took quite a few in Macau when I was there earlier in the year but nowhere near as detailed as yours. Let me know if you're interested and I'll post some.

This next batch is from Korea, around the Busan area, with a focus on Delivery scooters. Korea has a good mix of scooter brands including those from Japan, Taiwan, and China.

Here is a Daelim Citi II:

Dominos uses these Honda Delivery Scooters instead of Gyro Canopies:

This is a SYM GTS 125:

Greetings:

Early '60s "midsize" Honda Twins carried the Benly name. This may have been pre-overhead cam era. They sold like hotcakes and made Honda grow into serious contention in the motorcycle world, challenging the venerable British bikes.

The next few posts will be from various cities in China. Wikipedia says gas scooters are banned in Qingdao, but I found one, maybe it was not registered, or perhaps rather than being banned, it may be that licenses for gasoline scooters are expensive or hard to get. I never figured it out, but in all the big cities, Qingdao, Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Dalian, essentially all scooters are electric. The brands are unrecognizable, so I won't post the names as I don't know them. The electric scooters are mostly beat up and dirty, with old technology batteries. I never saw a really high tech electric scooter there. The cars, however, are clean and modern. I saw many Lamborghinis in China, and even a McLaren. I asked why the cars are clean and modern, but the scooters are old and beat up, and the answer seems to be that new cars are symbol of recent wealth, but scooters are workaday, so there is no need to flaunt them.

Here are some scooters from around the Qingdao area of China:

This next small batch is from the Tianjin/Beijing area. In spite of the Chinese making millions of gasoline powered scooters, and selling them worldwide, you don't see them on the streets in China.

This first photo is taken on a rainy day a couple of blocks away from Tiananmen Square in Beijing, and it shows why there won't be many scooter photos in this post from the Beijing/Tianjin area. There are still far more bicycles here than scooters, and what scooters there are are electric:

Image

You can see a couple of scooters in the bicycle photo. You can spot them because they have smaller wheels. This is a typical scooter in the Tianjin/Beijing area. Great basketization on this one!:
Image

This is a nice hot food delivery electric scooter in Tianjin:
Image

This last photo from Beijing/Tianjin area is another van that I liked:
Image

The next post will be from the Shanghai area, and there are far more scooters than bicycles there.
