lighter inner pulley

lighter inner pulley
i noticed that the inner pulley on the engine is very heavy. a lot of material can be taken off this. would it help to make this lighter so there is less stress on the motor and more power goes to the wheels? or does this have an important purpose?

grind or machine down the back of it until there is about 1/16 of material left at the top.(it will get thicker closer to the engine, the way it is made.

? The inner pulley is aluminum. It has cooling fins on it to circulate air. I wouldn't remove those.
Now the alternator side you might be able to lighten, but I've never looked at it closely. There tends to be more weight there. MC racers remove the alternator (and starter) for racing, and charge the battery b/t races. But they don't run headlights either. You would also need to keep the fan in there, as it cools the engine.

my inner pulley is made of steel because a magnet sticks to it.i do remember breaking the inner pulley off an 84 tho and i think that was aluminum because of the way it broke. it probably weighs 3-4 lbs. it is the width of a dime and doesnt need to be. so if i made it lighter would it help performence? here are some pics.i just want to run it by u first because if it helps to spin the engine i will leave it alone.

i just took a look at an 84 and it does have fins an is made of alumninum. why is this different? i am guessin that it wont make a difference then since the 84 is lighter then the 87. this isnt acting like a flywheel is it so it wont bog? i will wait for ur response before i go and lighten it up.weird. i thought it was the same. would it effect anything if i lightened it up?

Well, if a variator would fit yours, I've got one from an Aero 50 I'll sell you. It won't fit the Spree, it's too wide and thick (answering that question so often raised.) It might fit yours, which would help you out. Measure your inner pulley width (front face to back face,) the hole diameter and thickness for the shaft, and the diameter of the overall pulley, and post them.
I can tell you guys now that the thicker heavier one pictured is from the 87 engine. The thin, light aluminum one with the fins (about 1/3 the weight) is from the 84 engine. I know this because I have both motors, and am going to try which one is better overall for daily riding, trying both these pulleys on an 87 engine. That is, of course, after I get this darned thing to hold idle... I cleaned the carb but I think the idle circuit is still dirty based on what I read on other posts. (if anyone can help, so that I can do the pulley test and post results sooner: My scooter starts when cold, and can rev up when given throttle, but then bogs and dies and then either can't start, or starts for a split second and chokes and dies. Giving it throttle at this point doesn't help it start or run. Please PM me if you know what's going on, thanks.)
