Mounting SIde Stand

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

Very nice KM! I hope you snap a pic or 2 of the attachment next time you peel off the floorboards. I like warming up on my centerstand, but tired of it grinding into tarmac every time a corner gets interesting! That costly laundry detergent adds up, too.

it only took me nearly ALL day Sunday to do it,(one trip to Lowes for steel)!!
the whole time i was making it i'd tell myself-"you should be taking pics, you should be taking pics, you should be taking pics..."

i can find /send you the appropriate hanger.
looks similar to this reject:
Image

requires only two hole drilled-
through the main frame tube !
the one i used the stand length was perfect, lop off the footpegs and holders
and use the 4 holes to weld steel strips to and then blah blah.

mines somewhat over engineered for it's intended purpose- to hold up a scooter-NOT a rider.although it prolly would.

will work on any scoot without a plastic under pan.
promise you wont laugh at my welds and i'll take the board off and shoot some pics?

Having none of my own, I am in no position to make fun of anyone's welding skills. I can't speak for the Forum but I can make any unkind critic's life unpleasant here.

actually this time i was fairly pleased. i think i have gas delivery issues (go ahead and insert comments) it's a freebie!!
sometims all the welder will do is pop and snap and i can hardly get anything but pieces of wire and blobs of weld attached to the piece i'm working with.

wire feed Lincoln 110 volt with gas.
having said that a welder such as this is a pretty darn handy device for the garage.

don't bother with the aluminum wire/ gas though- a whole nuther animal...

Shop welder.

Lincoln 100 amp mig is mine. I am strictly an amatuer.

Works good up to 1/8th inch.

If you don't weld much then I find it good to practice on some scrap metal before I go to welding my parts. Make sure you use enough heat and weld on clean metal. Rusty metal is better welded with flux core.

Those welds look great. The brackets are pretty thick considering the thickness of the parts you are attaching to.

Edit here is my version of a side stand. Lightweight and strong.

It had a couple of sections of square tubing of 3/4" and 1" and some 5 mm round rod. I thought perfect. I figured the flat part of the frame was a good spot to weld to.
Image
Well it took a couple of hours to make it work. I may put a foot on it and a wire to help reach it more easily.
Image
It has 50 degrees at least of static lean angle before the bracket hits.

Here it is with the baseplate on it

Greetings:

I don't know what you were embarassed about. Pro-looking to me, dude, but I agree with EliteDio: Way strong! Nyloc nuts, too. Are you planning to prop up the entire cast of Cirque du Soleil?

You're brave to drill the frame but if those frame holes are completely tight-filled by bolt material, there shouldn't be much/any strength loss in the main frame spar. This is offset by the thick brackets spanning the holes. Except for hiding the VIN sticker from the prying eyes of the Authorities, an enviable job.

How come the frame's yellow?

i added bracing to the top side as well so it's kinda two thick pieces sandwiched with a thin
layer in between.call it mustard on rye bread... :ndance:

IF i do another one for a different scoot i will streamline the process and make it look more ".. ahem..." factory", if i may be so bold.

i steer towards overkill when i do a add-on do dad such as this.

yeah well... it was naked when i painted it.i forgot that it is a freakin scooter and all the frame is covered in plastic!! duh.i like em to be clean at least while i build it... :newb:

mookie,

dude, that sidestand setup looks great! :worship: -your design is probably 20 times stronger / more functionally rigid than any of the aftermarket clamp on designs. Welds look good, too. Awesome job, man....
this one should be stickied... :2thumbs:
