1987 Honda elite SE50

Post by sipaboy »

On my way to pick up a Honda SE50 1987. 3k mileage and one owner. Wasn't sure what I'm getting. Any input would be great. He told me it goes around 43-45 mph. I was surprised about the top speed. On my way now and $400 was the agreed price. Hoping Im getting a keeper. I have a 1995 Helix with 5k mileage and a Honda Gyro Canopy from Japan registered as a moped. I guess those three rides would be enough in my garage for now. Also advise on subtle mods to make it more angry.....

Just got back. 3000 miles on the odometer. Pretty clean and garage kept. This things is quick. Test drove it before I loaded to my pick up and got it to 42mph and ran out of road with some more to spare. This thing is tiny and fast. I'll clean it up a bit and Im riding a few miles after. I got the Helix a baby brother. Any advise and more info about this model is much appreciated gentlemen.

Greetings:

If you have the good fortune to possess the Elusive 10:1 gears, then yours is arguably the fastest of the AF05-engined Hondas. More info available Hee-Yah.

I checked the bottom of the frame and the corner of the sticker says SE50. Sooo smooth going to the top speed. Honda had to make it fast and quiet for a two stroke. Im trying to find more info about it. I think I'll keep it stock. Paint is still shiny and most parts are in great condition. Hoping this is the one to get if the sticker says SE50. Thanks ahead for more info and advise

I rode it to work which is 1.2 miles away. Half way after enjoying a nice run for top speed . All of a sudden the bike stalls. It feels like no gas going in. I strolled it to work and had a bunch of my students waiting and laughing seeing me push this little creature. Went to teach and got my truck to haul it home. I opened up the left side panel and found the problem. I lost a screw on the intake to carb connection. Only one screw was holding. Found a replacement and started it and it all was fine again. When it broke down the first thing I said was why would it break down? It's a Honda!. Enjoying the ride. The Helix is parked for the meantime until I need to go further up the road. I want to see more SE50 pictures if anyone has some time to post it.

There seems to be a lot of reports about this failure lately. Maybe the o-rings in the insulator suffer from Shrinkage as these scooters approach 25 years of age. With the diminished compression at the groove, the bolts loosen and vibrate out? Perhaps some previous owner ham-fistedly stripped the carb flange threads?
Whatever the reason, unless you take care to secure this critical connection, it's likely to happen again. Worse than a stall would be the development of a vacuum leak here while out for an extended ride. Extra air entry will result in hot running and a cooked top end pretty quickly.

Sorry everytime I would post pics it would say too big. I found mine in craigslist. He had two a 87 se50 and an 88 . The 88 was bought first by a couple. They like the double seat if you can call that a double seat. Lucky me they ignored the SE50. Which I ended up taking home for $400 with 3100 miles.Mine doesn't have the same exhaust as the one in the picture. Mine is more basic[stock looking]. I just can't believe the top speed went to 45 mph . It was smooth all the way to 45mph and went up there quick.

Im planning to order a Keli Variator thru ebay. Anything else I need to make it work?I saw them for $40. I'm going to try to upgrade the variator first. Not too keen to touch the exhaust coz Im happy that the stock pipe is not too loud. Im planning to keep the airbox to keep it quiet also. I like the speed Im getting, maybe just a little more lively.Another 5 mph more is nice too.
How about upjetting and an extra hole on the airbox? Anyone know on hand the stock jet for a se50 1987 elite ? Thanks again. Been my daily rider and errand ride the last couple of days. Not sure what my MPG is . I still have gas still.
