Re: 1985 Honda spree clutch question
Springs might be shot. You should be idling at 1800 +/- 100 rpm without the tire spinning.
Re: 1985 Honda spree clutch question
I just had it religned and they didnt mention springs. They seem fine to me

Re: 1985 Honda spree clutch question
Maybe they are, don't want to steer you otherwise. Just saying, it is good practice to put new springs in while you have it all torn apart anyway. Best way to tune, is get a tach. If the wheel never spun before, and you know that you made no changes to what the carb was already set at, then this should tell you that for some reason, the new pads wanna bite down. Check with a tach to see if idle speed is higher then spec. If your idle is within spec and you are turning, then the problem is more then likely springs. On mine, I can bring the rpm up to about 2200 before the springs kick in and the wheel starts to spin. Researching possible ways to bring that more up to around the 3000 rpm mark. The higher up in the rpm's you can get the springs to catch, the faster and smoother the launch.

I think you answered your own question.Volvo850R wrote:Is it easy to change the springs my self? I have no idea how to take apart
If you have "no idea", it is not going to be easy.
The process is a bit tricky.
I am not able to give you a step-by-step instruction.

Re: 1985 Honda spree clutch question
When you say 'the wheel spins' do you mean when the wheel is off the ground on the stand? If so, does the engine slow down if you put the back brake on? I'm thinking that maybe the shoes can wear in a little?
Re: 1985 Honda spree clutch question
It spins when On the stand. If I come to a stop and just hold the back break IÔÇÖm good. I just got it all back together just going to send it

Re: 1985 Honda spree clutch question
Greetings:
The driven pulley spins freely on bearings, relying on the clutch to secure the connection when RPMs reach engagement speed. There is a certain amount of bearing drag that will slowly spin the output shaft, even with the clutch disengaged. As long as you can stop it without slowing the engine down, you should be fine. If not, the Idle RPM is too high, there's an issue with the clutch, or the idler bearings are getting "catchy".

Re: 1985 Honda spree clutch question
Yep, that might be very well it as well. If you can put your foot on it lightly while it is spinning and it stops, then I wouldn't worry about it so much. I like to set my idle at 1800 (warm, and choke not engaged), and go with that. If it's on the ground, and not trying to move forward at idle with the brake disengaged, then you are golden. If it starts to move forward a bit, then something is worn or needs a dab of grease. Don't worry too much about spinning on the stand.. ideally, it won't, all the better if it does, but no biggy for the most part as long as it plays nice on the ground.
Re: 1985 Honda spree clutch question
If it bothers you, set the parking brake...just dont forget its on if you wanna revv while its on the stand. Like Wheeldude says, its just the needle bearing drag within the Driven Face assembly. Perfectly normal.
I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

Re: 1985 Honda spree clutch question
So, to back up a bit here and clarify. Is the replacement clutch one that has been re padded? Is it off of a different Spree? Define replace, thanks. Might help get to the bottom of the issue since you are unskilled in spring replacement. So I'm guessing someone else did the new clutch for you.Volvo850R wrote:Hey i just replace the clutch in my spree

Yes sent to jw clutch werks. Repadded. I have impact gun and vise. Im sure i can get it apart and replace the springs. It does seem like when it on the stand and you apply reae brake the motor rev does come down little bit

Re: 1985 Honda spree clutch question
Did you try just turning down the idle a touch, at the carb?
